Antoine K. Fahd, M.D., Ph.D., FAAO, FACS
Chief Eye Physician and Surgeon Board Certified Ophthalmologist by The American Board of Ophthalmology |
Dr. Fahd has been a leader in the refractive surgery industry for the past ten years. His journey into the field of medicine is somewhat unique being the only refractive surgeon in California to hold an undergraduate degree in Electrical Engineering and a Doctorate in Laser Physics. His combined experience in engineering and medicine has allowed him to provide the best care for his patients. In fact, his expertise in the refractive surgical field is highlighted by the fact that less than 1 % of his patients have needed further surgery (touch-ups) following the original procedure. The industry average for "touch-ups" is 10 %.
Dr. Fahd has performed over 35,000 LASIK procedures; he uses cutting-edge technology to provide the best care and results for his patients. In fact, he performs Custom/Wavefront Lasik using the latest third generation wavefront guided Ladarvision. Further, for those individuals who are not LASIK candidates, Dr. Fahd uses implantable contact lenses (ICL) to help them see without glasses. He is the only Surgeon at the Laser Eye Center to use ICL (STAAR Visian and AMO Verisyse lenses) and he has recently been chosen to be one of a handful of surgeons in the US to be certified using these lenses. Dr. Fahd also performs state of the art lens implants to help patients over 40 years old to see far and close up without glasses using multifocal Lenses (RESTOR and ReZoom).
Dr. Fahd has received several awards for his involvement in the refractive surgical field. He is the first surgeon in Southern California to be awarded the Centurion Surgeon and Quality of Vision award By Alcon, the Ladar Vision Corporation, for his superior refractive surgical skills. In addition, an independent National study published by Ocular Surgical News in March 2006 has showed that Dr. Fahd has one of the lowest enhancement rates (touch-up) in the nation. Dr. Fahd credits this to his meticulous surgical technique, experience and to a computerized surgical statistical outcome that he had developed. Dr. Fahd is also listed in Who's Who in Medicine, a publication which recognizes doctors for high achievements. Furthermore, his Orange County locations have been voted "Best Lasik Center" five years in a row by a public opinion poll conducted by the Orange County Register.
Dr Fahd's interest in medicine developed while he was pursuing his undergraduate education in Electrical Engineering at Bradley University in Illinois. During the course of his studies, Dr. Fahd quickly realized that a career in engineering was not going to fully satisfy his desire to help others. He began to investigate options that would allow him to apply engineering science toward other fields. He saw a natural link between the field of engineering and medical surgery; which requires a great degree of discipline, skill, and focus.
Dr. Fahd's strong interest in medicine did not deter him from completing his initial course of study and he attained a PhD degree in Electrical Engineering from the prestigious Georgia Institute of Technology in Atlanta, Georgia. His research interests were in the area of electromagnetic fields and lasers. During his graduate work, Dr. Fahd worked as an investigator with NASA and the Jet Propulsion Laboratory.
With the first phase of professional journey behind him, Dr. Fahd turned his focus to medicine. He attended medical school at the Medical College of Georgia and graduated with honors at the top 5% of his class. He was elected to the Alpha Omega Alpha National Medical Honor Society. After completing medical school, Dr. Fahd completed his ophthalmology residency at the University of California, Irvine.
During residency, Dr. Fahd distinguished himself through his superb surgical and clinical skills. He mastered the "no patch, no stitch" cataract extraction and introduced numerous revolutionary surgical techniques. Furthermore, Dr. Fahd worked with world renowned attending physicians and eye surgeons. After completing his residency, Dr. Fahd completed a refractive surgery fellowship to help enhance his surgical skills.
Dr. Fahd conducted several research projects, publications, and abstracts pertaining to Excimer lasers and photoablation of human corneal tissues. He has successfully completed and received several certifications for specialty courses. These include: LADARWAVE Excimer Laser System with Infrared eye tracking technology; VISX; Nidek Laser Systems; Amadeus, Nidek and Moria Microkeratomes systems. Dr. Fahd also received certification for Conductive Keratoplasty (CK), the treatment for patients wanting to get rid of their reading glasses. In addition, Dr Fahd has received special certification for Wavefront/Custom Cornea treatment; this procedure not only corrects a patient's prescription but also treats high and low order aberrations of the eye. This provides the patients with improved results and minimal side effects.
Dr. Fahd is an active member in several medical associations including the American Medical Association, the California Ophthalmologic Society, American Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgery and he is a Fellow in the American Academy of Ophthalmology (FAAO). Dr. Fahd is also a Fellow in the prestigious American College of Surgeons (FACS).
Today, Dr. Fahd performs a variety of intraocular surgical procedures including glaucoma surgery and corneal transplants. While at the Laser Eye Center, Dr. Fahd has introduced many innovative surgical procedures to his practice. These include no stitch Pterygium surgery, usage of Amniotic membranes in recurrent Pterygium therapy and TESEEL glue. In addition, Dr Fahd performs many facial cosmetic surgical procedures including BOTOX, no stitch Eyelid surgery, and Skin Dermal fillings. Dr. Fahd generates many referrals from other physician to treat complex cases.
With all his experience, Dr. Fahd has positioned himself as an innovator and educator in the field of refractive surgery. On an academic level, he holds a clinical faculty position at a major teaching hospital in which he maintains his involvement in teaching and assisting new residents in the operating room as well as the clinic. Additionally, he is on staff at HOAG hospital where he performs his intraocular procedures. On a professional level, he is often asked to lecture to fellow Surgeons/Ophthalmologists at medical conferences.
Most of Dr. Fahd's patients come to him as referrals. In fact, they fly in from Europe and the Far East to seek him specifically for his excellent care, surgical expertise, and superior results. Dr. Fahd's surgical excellence has also earned him the trust of many Physicians in the industry; he has operated on several Laser Eye Center employees, this includes the founder, as well as many laser company employees and family members who choose Dr. Fahd to perform their LASIK procedure. In addition, a significant part of Dr. Fahd's practice includes taking care of complications and touch ups from other surgeons.
Dr. Fahd is one of the first surgeons in Southern California to perform Wavefront Lasik on his patients. He recently performed this procedure on his wife who is now free of glasses and is seeing better than 20/20.
Dr. Fahd spends his free time with his wife and two sons. They enjoy travel, kayaking and cooking.
