For the past 20 years Dr. Shammas has been a leader in the refractive surgery industry and has played a vital role in the growth and development of the Laser Eye Center.
As the dedicated President of Laser Eye Center, Dr. Shammas consistently provides patients with the highest standard of care available in a comfortable environment.
Dr. Shammas believes that in addition to experience, high quality of vision correction achieved is the essence to a successful refractive practice. Going beyond 20/20 vision is his goal. Dr. Shammas has received several awards pertaining to his experience in the refractive surgical field, those including Centurion Surgeon and the Quality of Vision Award for the high quality and meticulous care his patients receive under his care.
Dr. Shammas has performed over 35,000 procedures to date. He offers the latest most advanced FDA approved technology to his patients so that they can attain the best quality of vision correction available today. In fact, an independent National study showed that Dr. Shammas has one of the lowest enhancement rates (touch-up) in the nation, published in Ocular News, March 2006 publication. Further, his offices in the metropolitan area have been voted #1 Lasik center five years in a row by a public opinion poll conducted by the Orange County Register.
The most exciting aspect of refractive surgery for Dr. Shammas is improving his patients' quality of life. He takes pride in giving his patients the miracle of sight without the dependence of glasses or contacts. He looks forward to seeing his patients post-operatively and sharing along with them their excitement over their newfound vision. This is the most rewarding benefit of his profession.
Coming from a family of Ophthalmologists, Dr. Shammas received his Bachelor's, Doctor of Medicine at the American University in Lebanon. There he also completed his internship and residency in Ophthalmology. Dr. Shammas completed his Fellowship in Glaucoma at the Estelle Doheny Eye Foundation, University of Southern California. Dr. Shammas has held academic appointments as an assistant Professor in Clinical Ophthalmology and Director of Glaucoma Service at Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center in Texas and White Memorial Medical Center in Los Angeles, California. Dr. Shammas has published several articles and abstracts relating to Ophthalmology. Dr. Shammas is well received and respected in the field of Ophthalmology.
Dr. Shammas is affiliated with the American Academy of Ophthalmology and Doheny USC Professionals Association. Furthermore, he is an active member of the American Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgeons (ASCRS), and he has been a member of the Association for Research in Vision and Ophthalmology. Dr. Shammas is listed in the Who's Who in Medicine . Further, he holds hospital privileges at San Dimas Community Hospital.
Dr. Shammas has received numerous certifications pertaining to refractive surgery including Nidek Excimer Laser System Certification Course, Nidek Microkeratome Course, Amadeus Microkeratome and Ladar Vision Excimer Certification Course. Dr. Shammas received certification on Conductive Keratoplasty (CK), the procedure for patients wanting to be relieved from reading glasses. In addition, Dr. Shammas received special certification for the latest in technology Ladarwave/Custom Cornea. In fact, Dr. Shammas is one of the first refractive surgeons in California to perform Ladarwave/Custom Cornea treatment on his patients.
Quarterly Dr. Shammas conducts grand round with his fellow Physicians and Optometrists to further educate and discuss new treatments options for patients.
Dr. Shammas' wife Malak is also a physician that specializes in Internal Medicine. They both look forward to spending quality time together raising their son and two daughters. Both he and his wife enjoy world travel to destinations rich in culture, as well as adventure.
