Antoine K. Fahd, MD, PhD, FAAO, FACS

Chief Eye Physician and Surgeon, Board Certified Ophthalmologist, American Board of Ophthalmology

During my studies, I quickly realized that a career in engineering was not going to fully satisfy my desire to help others. I began to investigate options and saw a natural link between the field of engineering and medical surgery.

~ Antoine K. Fahd MD, PhD, FAAO, FACS

For ten years, Antoine K. Fahd, MD, has been in the forefront in the refractive surgery field. Dr. Fahd is the only refractive surgeon in California to hold an undergraduate degree in Electrical Engineering and a Doctorate in Laser Physics. His combined experience in engineering and medicine enables him to provide the best surgical and follow-up care for his patients. Less than one-percent of his patients have required surgical touch-ups following the original procedure.

Dr. Fahd has performed over 35,000 LASIK procedures using the latest technology, such as third- generation wavefront-guided Ladarvision®. He is one of the first surgeons in Southern California to perform Wavefront™ LASIK on his patients. Dr. Fahd is the only surgeon at the Laser Eye Center to use ICL (STAAR Visian™ and AMO Verisyse™ lenses) and has recently been chosen to be one of a handful of surgeons in the U.S. to be certified using these lenses. Dr. Fahd also performs state-of-the-art implants on patients over 40-years old using multifocal lenses (RESTOR® and ReZoom™). This enables them to see both far and close-up without glasses.

Dr. Fahd has been recognized numerous times for his outstanding achievements in refractive surgery, including listings in Who’s Who in Medicine and awards from Ladar Vision® Corporation and Alcon. In fact, Dr. Fahd was the first vision surgeon in California to be given Alcon’s Centurion Surgeon and Quality of Vision award. In an independent study published in Ocular Surgery News (March 2006), Dr. Fahd had one of the lowest enhancement (touch-up) rates in the nation. And, in an opinion poll conducted by the Orange County Register, Laser Eye Center was voted the #1 LASIK Center for five consecutive years.

Dr. Fahd received an undergraduate degree in Electrical Engineering from Bradley University in Illinois. He earned his PhD in Electrical Engineering from the prestigious Georgia Institute of Technology where his research interests were electromagnetic fields and lasers. During his graduate work, Dr. Fahd worked as an investigator with NASA and the Jet Propulsion Laboratory.

Dr. Fahd graduated in the top five-percent of his class from the Medical College of Georgia and was elected to the Alpha Omega Alpha National Medical Honor Society. He completed his ophthalmology residency at the University of California, Irvine where he mastered the no patch, no stitch cataract extraction and introduced numerous revolutionary surgical techniques. After completing his residency, Dr. Fahd completed a refractive surgery fellowship to further enhance his surgical skills.

To offer the utmost in patient care, Dr. Fahd has continued to study refractory technology. He has conducted several research projects, publications, and abstracts pertaining to Excimer lasers and photoablation of human corneal tissues. And, he has received several certifications for specialty courses, including:

  • LADARWAVE® Excimer Laser System with Infrared eye tracking technology;
  • VISX™;
  • Nidek Laser Systems;
  • Amadeus®, Nidek and Moria Microkeratomes systems;
  • Conductive Keratoplasty (CK®)and
  • Wavefront/CUSTOMCORNEA® treatment.

Dr. Fahd is an active member in the American Medical Association, the California Ophthalmologic Society and American Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgery. He is a Fellow in the American Academy of Ophthalmology (FAAO) and in the prestigious American College of Surgeons (FACS).

Dr. Fahd performs a variety of intraocular surgical procedures, including glaucoma surgery and corneal transplants. He has introduced many innovative surgical procedures to the Laser Eye Center, such as no- stitch Pterygium surgery; use of amniotic membranes in recurrent Pterygium therapy; and TESEEL glue. Dr Fahd also performs facial cosmetic surgical procedures, including BOTOX® injections, no-stitch eyelid surgery and Skin Dermal fillings.

Dr. Fahd holds a clinical faculty position at a major teaching hospital and is on staff at HOAG Memorial Hospital where he performs intraocular procedures. He is often asked to lecture to fellow surgeons and ophthalmologists at medical conferences.

Dr. Fahd is a trusted and respected surgeon known for his excellent care, expertise, and superior results. Many of Dr. Fahd’s patients are referrals from Europe and the Far East as well as physicians in the industry. He has operated on several Laser Eye Center employees, as well as other laser company employees and family members. In addition, a significant part of Dr. Fahd’s practice includes treating complications and touch ups from other surgeons.

Dr. Fahd spends his free time with his wife and two sons. They enjoy travel, kayaking and cooking.
