Earning FDA approval in 2005, the Visian ICL is an Implantable Contact Lens that is placed behind the iris of the eye through a small incision. Composed of material known as collamer, the ICL has 100% biocompatibility with the body’s natural chemistry. In under a half hour, the lens is rolled up, and implanted in the eye where it gently opens up, virtually undetectable. The process is very similar to cataract surgery, however with the ICL implant no eye tissue is permanently altered and the original shape of the cornea remains intact.
A fast recovery time is associated with this procedure because it is an outpatient surgery, meaning the patient returns home the same day. The patient will have to schedule a post-operative visit with our doctor the day following surgery in order for the eye’s internal pressure to be recorded and to check on the healing process. Some patients may even have eye drops prescribed for use in the days following surgery, but overall a rapid visual recovery is to be expected.
At Laser Eye Center, we use the latest technology, known as Sonomed UBM (ultrasound bio-microscopy) to retrieve the exact dimensions for the lens implant. This allows our doctors to complete the process with outstanding accuracy, therefore achieving remarkable results. Patients instantly notice a difference in their vision and are delighted with the outcome.

Who is a Candidate for Implantable Contacts?
Patients over the age of 21, looking to correct myopia (nearsightedness) or mild astigmatism, are the best candidates for this procedure. Additionally, it is optimal for patients who cannot receive the All Laser LASIK procedure. Although All Laser LASIK is successful for many, there are a few candidates who do not qualify. Patients with thin corneas or patients on contraindicated prescriptions may be exempt from All Laser LASIK. In these cases, Visian ICL may be the solution.
Convenience of Visian ICL
Patients also love the convenience the ICL offers. Once the procedure is complete, they no longer have to worry about activities that were previously affected by their glasses or regular contacts. Water sports, such as swimming or scuba diving can be enjoyed hassle-free. It is also worth noting that this procedure is 100% reversible. Since the cornea tissue will not be changed in any way, it is possible for our doctor to remove the Implantable Contact Lens if the patient desires or in the rare case the prescription needs to be changed years down the road.
How Much Do Implantable Contact Lenses Cost?
Implantable contact lens cost will vary from patient to patient, but for Los Angeles patients it typically falls between $4,000 and $5,000. This price includes the cost of the Visian ICL lens, the pre-surgery consultation, hospital fees, and the surgeon’s fee as well as any follow-up care that may be required.
