Custom LASIK

Custom LASIK is a variation of traditional LASIK. In addition to treating lower order aberrations (nearsightedness, farsightedness, astigmatism), custom LASIK can correct subtle higher order aberrations, which can cause problems like poor night vision, glare, shadows and halos. Our custom LASIK surgeons take precise measurements of your eye and then use that information to guide the laser when performing the treatment. In addition to improving how much you can see, custom LASIK surgery also improves how well you can see.

Custom LASIK can reduce or eliminate the need to wear eyeglasses or contacts to see clearly. If you would like to learn more about how custom LASIK can improve your vision, we encourage you to schedule a consultation at Laser Eye Center, serving Los Angeles, Orange County and all Inland Empire areas. Candidates for Custom LASIK:

Custom LASIK candidates should be at least 18 years old with mild to moderately high degrees of myopia, hyperopia or astigmatism. Candidates for custom LASIK should have sufficient corneal thickness and be free of any diseases or serious eye conditions (such as glaucoma or cataracts) that could compromise the success of the procedure. Also, custom LASIK candidates should have a stable vision prescription for at least a year prior to surgery.

All custom LASIK candidates meet with our Laser Eye Center doctors to discuss the procedure and their vision needs.

What Happens During Custom LASIK?

During the first step of custom LASIK, our doctors use a wavefront device called the CUSTOMWave CUSTOMCORNEA system to collect information about your eye; specifically, its lower and higher order aberrations. The wavefront device will transmit a ray of light into your eye; the light is reflected off the retina, through the pupil and back into the device, where it is received and arranged into a unique pattern to show your lower and higher order aberrations.

This information is displayed as a three-dimensional map to determine the registration and alignment of your eye’s imperfections. It helps our surgeons guide the laser, which gently removes bits of tissue to improve the shape of the cornea.

Custom LASIK is a quick procedure. Anesthetic eye drops are used so treatment is not painful.

Recovering from Custom LASIK:

Custom LASIK Laser Eye Surgery

The recovery from custom LASIK is similar to that of traditional LASIK. After surgery, you will rest in a recovery suite for a short time before being released to go home. You will not be able to drive, and should make arrangements for someone else to drive you home. Once at home, you should get as much rest as possible, and avoid any activities that could strain your eyes. If you experience any discomfort, we can write you a prescription for medication. Most of our patients sleep for the rest of the day following their procedure.

When you wake up the next day, it is very likely that you will notice an improvement in your vision. Our Laser Eye Center doctors will schedule a follow-up appointment to check your healing progress and answer any questions you may have. We will also advise when it is safe for you to drive and return to work.

Full recovery takes several days. Side effects are very minimal but can include temporary sensitivity to light, swelling and tearing.
