All Laser LASIK by IntraLase® is a leading-edge tool that relies solely on laser energy instead of the microkeratome, the metal-blade cutting instrument traditionally used in LASIK procedures. In All Laser LASIK, the surgeon uses the laser to create a hinged flap in the cornea then removes excess tissue underneath with an excimer laser. Photorefractive keratectomy (PRK) is the predecessor to traditional LASIK. Instead of creating a flap in the cornea, the entire outer layer of corneal cells (called the epithelium) is removed. The laser is then used to reshape the cornea to properly refract light. The epithelial cells regenerate on their own after surgery. PRK is an option normally proposed for patients who are not candidates for LASIK due to their corneas being too thin.
Contoura™ uses a detailed map of the eye to guide treatment. Prior to surgery, a topography instrument precisely measures the peaks and valleys of the cornea and the information is used to create a personalized treatment profile. Cataracts are a common age-related vision problem. The only treatment for this clouding of the eye’s natural lens is to surgically remove the lens and replace it with an artificial lens. Cataract surgery is a very safe procedure. Through a small incision, the clouded lens is gently fragmented, and the pieces are removed. Then, a transparent synthetic lens, like the Crystalens, is placed to restore clear focusing power at multiple distances.
