Multifocal IOLs: When Are They Appropriate?

Multifocal IOLs

Advances in ophthalmology have made way for several innovative options when it comes to vision correction, including after cataract removal. In the past, cataract surgery and artificial intraocular lenses (IOLs) were primarily used to restore distance vision. Cataract patients wishing to restore near vision lost due to presbyopia would have to rely on reading eyeglasses or bifocals. But thanks to multifocal IOLs, some patients are able to enjoy restored vision at all distances with a reduced dependence on eyeglasses after cataract surgery. If you have cataracts and want the greatest freedom from eyeglasses, you may want to consider multifocal IOLs. In this blog post, Laser Eye Center shares more information on these lenses, including when they are an appropriate option.

What are Multifocal IOLs?

Unlike monofocal IOLs, which provide vision focus at one set distance, multifocal IOLs are designed with different focusing powers. These IOLs provide both a distance focus and a near focus at all times thanks to the different zones on them. Your brain will learn to automatically select the appropriate focus for the task at hand. There are several different types of multifocal IOLs approved by the FDA for the treatment of presbyopia. Speak to our team today to learn about the IOLs we offer.

Are You a Candidate?

If you have cataracts and wish to reduce your dependence on reading glasses or bifocals, a multifocal IOL may be right for you. But before choosing this IOL, you should be aware that it does require some compromise in the clarity of distance vision. If your job requires you to have the best possible distance vision or if you are otherwise unwilling to accept this compromise, a multifocal IOL may not be the best option for you. If you do not have cataracts and instead have another preexisting eye condition, you may not be an eligible candidate for a multifocal IOL.

At Laser Eye Center, we take pride in helping all of our patients restore their vision by using the most advanced and appropriate diagnostic tools and treatments. During your initial consultation with us, we will carefully examine your eyes and discuss your unique considerations in order to determine which IOL is best for you.
