5 Misconceptions about Cataracts

In spite of cataracts being so common, myths and misinformation about the condition abound. Without consulting an ophthalmologist, it can be difficult to separate fact from fiction.

Luckily, the cataract surgeons at Laser Eye Center are always available to set the record straight. Read on as our team dispels some of the most common misconceptions about cataracts.

Only elderly people get cataracts

Although most cataracts are part of the aging process, there are other factors that can lead to cataracts. For example, cataracts have been linked to diabetes and traumatic accidents that cause eye injuries. Sun damage, prolonged use of corticosteroid medications and smoking have all been linked to the early formation of cataracts. In rare cases, cataracts are present at birth.

Cataracts can be treated with eye drops

Eyedrops or other topical medications will do nothing for cataracts. The only way to treat a cataract is to surgically remove the cloudy lens and replace it with an artificial lens implant.

Every cataract must be removed ASAP

Doctors may detect cataracts in their early stages, when they are not significantly interfering with vision. Depending on the circumstances of the case, they recommend a “watch and wait approach,” wherein they closely monitor the cataract for any changes.

Cataracts can come back after surgery

Once the eye’s cloudy lens has been removed and replaced with an artificial lens implant, the artificial lens cannot develop a cataract. Although only present in a small minority of cases, what can happen is the capsule holding the lens in place can become cloudy, causing symptoms similar to those of a cataract. This condition, called posterior capsular opacification, may give the impression that a cataract has returned. Posterior capsular opacification can be easily treated during a quick, in-office laser treatment.
