Ways to Overcome Presbyopia

Presbyopia Treatment Los Angeles, CA

Presbyopia affects almost everyone, starting sometime after the age of 40. This condition is characterized by a gradual decline in the ability to see objects up close. Because the lens become stiffer with age, it no longer has the flexibility to focus on nearby objects. Activities like reading can cause eye strain or migraines.

Since presbyopia is virtually unavoidable, the eye doctors at Laser Eye Center suggest some ways their patients can maintain their vision.

Eyeglasses

People tend to start using reading glasses in their 40s or 50s, and presbyopia is the culprit. While some patients choose to adjust their existing glasses prescription to correct for presbyopia, others opt to wear reading glasses only when they need to focus on something close by. Glasses with bifocal, trifocal or progressive lenses are considered the best for overcoming presbyopia.

Refractive Lens Exchange (RLE)

Some people prefer to avoid the hassle of eyewear and ask for a permanent solution to presbyopia. For many, RLE is that solution. This surgery, which is essentially identical to cataract surgery, involves removing the natural lens from the eye and replacing it with an intraocular lens (IOL) that corrects refractive errors like presbyopia.

Laser Eye Center uses the most advanced technology when performing RLE (sometimes known as clear lens exchange or CLE). The Catalys Precision Laser System allows our ophthalmologists to take a detailed 3D image of each eye to treat the eye with the ultimate precision. We offer some of the most effective IOLs available in the U.S., including the AcrySof IQ PanOptix Trifocal IOL and the TECNIS Symfony IOL.

Custom Monovision

Monovision is a technique that corrects distance vision in the dominant eye while correcting near vision in the other eye. If only one eye can focus on an object, the brain tends to ignore the incoming picture from the other eye. Although patients typically go through an adjustment period, within a matter of weeks patients find they can see well at all distances, thus minimizing their presbyopia. Monovision can be accomplished with contact lenses or with vision correction surgery.
